Reading: 2 Samuel 23:1-7

Now these are the last words of David:
The oracle of David, son of Jesse,
   the oracle of the man whom God exalted,
the anointed of the God of Jacob,
   the favourite of the Strong One of Israel: 

² The spirit of the Lord speaks through me,
   his word is upon my tongue.
³ The God of Israel has spoken,
   the Rock of Israel has said to me:
One who rules over people justly,
   ruling in the fear of God,
⁴ is like the light of morning,
   like the sun rising on a cloudless morning,
   gleaming from the rain on the grassy land. 

⁵ Is not my house like this with God?
   For he has made with me an everlasting covenant,
   ordered in all things and secure.
Will he not cause to prosper
   all my help and my desire?
⁶ But the godless are all like thorns that are thrown away;
   for they cannot be picked up with the hand;
⁷ to touch them one uses an iron bar
   or the shaft of a spear.
   And they are entirely consumed in fire on the spot.

Introduction

Most of Old Testament is a shadow of the coming of Christ.  References to this common belief include stories about Abraham, deliverance of the Jews from Egypt, King David, Jonah and so on; all these point to the coming and reign of Christ.  The coming of Christ was not an afterthought; He freely laid His life down for the sins of the world.  The Son of God took on human flesh, died a shameful death on the cross of Calvary, restoring the relationship between God and man.  The Scripture makes it clear that Christ is not just our Lord and Saviour; He is our King too!  Wherever He leads, we will follow.  The Lordship and Kingship of Christ are everlasting; and all who believe in Him will someday reign with Him.  That is our blessed hope!

1) How will you describe the Kingship and Lordship of Jesus Christ?

Psalm 100:1-5

¹ Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth.
²   Worship the Lord with gladness;
   come into his presence with singing. 

³ Know that the Lord is God.
   It is he that made us, and we are his;
   we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. 

⁴ Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
   and his courts with praise.
   Give thanks to him, bless his name. 

⁵ For the Lord is good;
   his steadfast love endures for ever,
   and his faithfulness to all generations.

Acts 17:24-31

The God who made the world and everything in it, he who is Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in shrines made by human hands, ²⁵nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mortals life and breath and all things. ²⁶From one ancestor he made all nations to inhabit the whole earth, and he allotted the times of their existence and the boundaries of the places where they would live, ²⁷so that they would search for God and perhaps grope for him and find him—though indeed he is not far from each one of us. ²⁸For “In him we live and move and have our being”; as even some of your own poets have said, “For we too are his offspring.” ²⁹Since we are God’s offspring, we ought not to think that the deity is like gold, or silver, or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of mortals. ³⁰While God has overlooked the times of human ignorance, now he commands all people everywhere to repent, ³¹because he has fixed a day on which he will have the world judged in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed, and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.’

Revelation 1:4B-8

Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, ⁵and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth.

To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood, ⁶and madeus to be a kingdom, priests serving his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
⁷ Look! He is coming with the clouds;
   every eye will see him,
even those who pierced him;
   and on his account all the tribes of the earth will wail.
So it is to be. Amen.

⁸ ‘I am the Alpha and the Omega’, says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty. 

2) What are the lessons for us in John 18:33-37 regarding the reign of Christ?

John 18:33-37

Then Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, ‘Are you the King of the Jews?’ ³⁴Jesus answered, ‘Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me?’ ³⁵Pilate replied, ‘I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?’ ³⁶Jesus answered, ‘My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.’ ³⁷Pilate asked him, ‘So you are a king?’ Jesus answered, ‘You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.’

Psalm 95:1-11

¹ O come, let us sing to the Lord;
   let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
² Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;
   let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
³ For the Lord is a great God,
   and a great King above all gods.
⁴ In his hand are the depths of the earth;
   the heights of the mountains are his also.
⁵ The sea is his, for he made it,
   and the dry land, which his hands have formed. 

⁶ O come, let us worship and bow down,
   let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!
⁷ For he is our God,
   and we are the people of his pasture,

O that today you would listen to his voice!
⁸   Do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah,

3) In what ways does Christ reign in our lives now?

Psalm 132:1-13

¹      Lord, remember David, *

                       and all the hardships he endured;

²      How he swore an oath to the Lord *

                       and vowed a vow to the Mighty One of Jacob:

³      ”I will not come under the roof of my house, *

                       nor climb up into my bed;

⁴      I will not allow my eyes to sleep, *

                       nor let my eyelids slumber;

⁵      Until I find a place for the Lord, *

                       a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob”

⁶      ”The Ark! We heard it was in Ephratah; *

                       we found it in the fields of Jearim.

⁷      Let us go to God’s dwelling place; *

                       let us fall upon our knees before his footstool.”

⁸      Arise, O Lord, into your resting-place, *

                       you and the ark of your strength.

⁹      Let your priests be clothed with righteousness; *

                       let your faithful people sing with joy.

¹⁰     For your servant David’s sake, *

                       do not turn away the face of your anointed.

¹¹     The Lord has sworn an oath to David; *

                       in truth, he will not break it:

Titus 2:11-15

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, ¹²training us to renounce impiety and worldly passions, and in the present age to live lives that are self-controlled, upright, and godly, ¹³while we wait for the blessed hope and the manifestation of the glory of our great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ. ¹⁴He it is who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds. ¹⁵ Declare these things; exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no one look down on you.

Conclusion

Christ is our Lord and King; wherever He leads, we will follow.  His Lordship and Kingship are everlasting; and we will someday reign with Him forever and ever.  That is our blessed hope!

Closing Prayer (Collect for Last Sunday after Pentecost: The Reign of Christ)

Almighty and everlasting God, whose will it is to restore all things in your well-beloved Son, our Lord and King, grant that the peoples of the earth, now divided and enslaved by sin, may be freed and brought together under his gentle and loving rule; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Prayer over the Gifts

Eternal God, by your grace you have raised us up and enthroned us with Christ in the heavenly realms. Receive all we offer you this day, and lead us in those good works for which you have created us. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts, that they may be the sacrament of the body of Christ and his blood of the new covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we, made acceptable in him, may be sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

In the fullness of time, reconcile all things in Christ, and make them new, and bring us to that city of light where you dwell with all your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation;

by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

And now, as our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

“I am the bread of life,” says the Lord.

Prayer after Communion

Almighty God, you have made us a royal priesthood in the kingdom of your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Make known his victory through us, we pray, that all the world may see his light. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen.

Glory to God,

whose power, working in us,

can do infinitely more

than we can ask or imagine.

Glory to God from generation to generation,

in the Church and in Christ Jesus,

for ever and ever. Amen.

Blessing

May Christ,

who out of defeat brings new hope and a new future,

fill you with his new life;

and the blessing of God almighty,
